The connected city was designed to be efficient, safe and life-enhancing for all its inhabitants.Permanent connectivity allows all of a city's urban elements to speak to each other, which in
turn, allows the city to maintain permanent vigilance.
That tireless attention has enormous benefits, but also many risks. And there's a fine line
between observing and spying. Cities around the world already have cameras that cause
controversy amongst their citizens who don't understand why they are monitored 24/7. In
China, the government has initiated a massive surveillance system that serves to catalogue its
citizens; ranking and classifying them as good or bad. Other countries are following suit.
Surveillance and data gathering systems exist in various cities in the USA, Canada, the UK,
Germany and many others.
